AWS lightsail-for-research: Lightsail for Research: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS added, 20.04 removed, version table

Service: lightsail-for-research · 2026-10-15 · Documentation low

File: lightsail-for-research/latest/ug/blueprints-plans.md

Summary

Adds Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as an available blueprint, removes the older Ubuntu 20.04 LTS entry, and adds a new section listing current and previous application versions (Ubuntu, JupyterLab, RStudio, VSCodium, Scilab) plus how to recreate previous versions via snapshots.

Security assessment

The change is a catalog/version update: it swaps the deprecated Ubuntu 20.04 LTS blueprint for 24.04 LTS and documents image versioning. Dropping an end-of-life base image is tangentially security-positive, but the diff contains no vulnerability, CVE, or security guidance, so it is not a security fix or security documentation.

Evidence

+ * **Ubuntu 24.04 LTS** – Ubuntu is an open source Linux distribution based on Debian. Lean, fast, and powerful, Ubuntu Server delivers services reliably, predictably and economically. It's a great base on which to build your virtual computers. For more information, see [Ubuntu releases](https://releases.ubuntu.com/noble/) on the _Ubuntu website_.

+### Application versions for virtual computers
+
+Lightsail for Research updates its application images to newer versions from time to time. When you create a virtual computer, you get the current version of the application that you choose. After an update, Lightsail for Research no longer offers the previous version to new virtual computers.
+
+You can still create a virtual computer that runs a previous version. First, create a snapshot of a virtual computer that already runs that version. Then, create a new virtual computer from the snapshot. The new virtual computer runs the same version as the original.
+
+The following table lists the current version that Lightsail for Research offers for each application. It also lists the previous version that you can create through snapshots.
+
+Application | Current version | Previous version
+---|---|---
+Ubuntu (base image) | 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) | 22.04 LTS
+JupyterLab | 4.6.3 | 4.0.2
+RStudio | 2026.08.0 | 2024.04.0
+VSCodium | 1.126.0 | 1.90.0
+Scilab | 2026.1.0 | 2024.1.0
+
+###### Note
+
+To create a previous version, you must have a virtual computer, or a snapshot of one, that already runs that version. When you create a new virtual computer, Lightsail for Research doesn't provide a direct way to select a previous version.
+
+For more information about creating and using snapshots, see [Backup virtual computers and disks with Lightsail for Research snapshots](./snapshots.html).
