AWS outposts: Document single-rack vs multi-rack Outposts configurations

Service: outposts · 2026-09-27 · Documentation low

File: outposts/latest/network-userguide/what-is-outposts.md

Summary

Restructures the AWS Outposts overview to describe two second-generation configurations (single-rack and multi-rack), updates the comparison table with new columns for compute, networking, power, footprint, and scalability, and moves accelerated-networking instance details into the EC2 section. No security content.

Security assessment

The change is purely a product/architecture description update (rack configurations, instance types, power, footprint). It mentions networking devices and LAGs only as hardware topology facts, not as security guidance, and introduces no vulnerability, credential, encryption, or IAM content.

Evidence

+ * **Single-rack Outposts** – Combines AWS managed compute, storage, and networking in a single 42U rack. It is purpose-built for locations with limited rack space or power. We deliver it as a self-contained rack that does not require a separate network rack. A single-rack configuration cannot be expanded by adding more racks (no scale-out). You can add capacity within the rack (scale-up).

-Second-generation Outposts racks have a network rack that serves as a traffic aggregation layer for all connected compute and storage racks allowing you to:
-
- * Scale your compute resources independently from your networking infrastructure, giving you more flexibility and cost efficiency as your workloads grow.
