AWS AmazonRDS: MariaDB 12.3 adds caching_sha2_password authentication

Service: AmazonRDS · 2026-08-12 · Documentation high

File: AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/MariaDB.Concepts.FeatureSupport.md · Type: encryption

Summary

Introduced support for caching_sha2_password plugin providing stronger password hashing than mysql_native_password.

Security assessment

Enables stronger password storage against brute-force attacks by using modern hashing algorithms.

Evidence

Authentication with the `caching_sha2_password` plugin – You can create users that authenticate with the `caching_sha2_password` plugin, which is the default authentication plugin in RDS for MySQL version 8.4. This plugin provides stronger password hashing than `mysql_native_password`.

+### MariaDB 12.3 support on Amazon RDS
+
+Amazon RDS supports the following new features for your DB instances running MariaDB version 12.3 or higher.
+
+###### Note
+
+MariaDB 12.3 is the first major version that Amazon RDS supports after MariaDB 11.8. If you upgrade from MariaDB 11.8, your DB instance also receives the features that MariaDB introduced in versions 12.0, 12.1, and 12.2.
+
+ * **Reserved user for RDS Proxy** – The `rdsproxyadmin` user is a reserved user in MariaDB 12.3 and higher. You can't modify or drop this user. For more information, see [MariaDB security on Amazon RDS](./MariaDB.Concepts.UsersAndPrivileges.html).
+
+ * **Drop protection for the replication user account for any host value** – You can't drop the `rdsrepladmin` user account for any host value. Previously, this protection applied only to `'rdsrepladmin'@'%'`. For more information, see [MariaDB security on Amazon RDS](./MariaDB.Concepts.UsersAndPrivileges.html).
+
+ * **Authentication with the`caching_sha2_password` plugin** – You can create users that authenticate with the `caching_sha2_password` plugin, which is the default authentication plugin in RDS for MySQL version 8.4. This plugin provides stronger password hashing than `mysql_native_password`.
+
+ * **Session authorization** – You can use the `SET SESSION AUTHORIZATION` statement to run statements as another user without opening a new connection. To use this statement, a user needs the `SET USER` privilege. This statement cannot be used inside a transaction, a prepared statement, or a stored routine, and cannot be used to set any internal user.
+
+ * **Deprecated or removed parameters** – The `innodb_ft_enable_diag_print` parameter is deprecated and has no effect for MariaDB version 12.3 DB instances. This parameter still exists in the parameter group. For more information, see [innodb_ft_enable_diag_print](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/reference/storage-engines/innodb/innodb-system-variables#innodb_ft_enable_diag_print) on the MariaDB website.
+
+ * **New valid values for parameters** – The following parameters have new valid values for MariaDB version 12.3 DB instances:
+
+ * The valid values for the [read_only](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/server-management/variables-and-modes/server-system-variables#read_only) parameter changed from `0` and `1` to `OFF`, `ON`, `NO_LOCK`, and `NO_LOCK_NO_ADMIN`. `NO_LOCK` additionally disallows `LOCK TABLES` and `SELECT ... IN SHARE MODE`, and `NO_LOCK_NO_ADMIN` applies the restriction to users who have the `READ ONLY ADMIN` privilege.
+
+ * The valid values for the [optimizer_switch](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/server-management/variables-and-modes/server-system-variables#optimizer_switch) parameter now include the [duplicateweedout](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/query-optimizations/optimization-strategies/duplicateweedout-strategy) and [reorder_outer_joins](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/query-optimizations/reorder_outer_joins) flags.
+
+ * The valid values for the [slave_type_conversions](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/ha-and-performance/standard-replication/replication-and-binary-log-system-variables#slave_type_conversions) parameter now include `ERROR_IF_MISSING_FIELD`.
+
+ * The maximum value of the [group_concat_max_len](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/server-management/variables-and-modes/server-system-variables#group_concat_max_len) parameter changed from `18446744073709547520` to `1073741824`.
+
+ * **New parameters** – The following parameters are new for MariaDB version 12.3 DB instances:
+
+ * The [max_open_cursors](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/server-management/variables-and-modes/server-system-variables#max_open_cursors) parameter sets the maximum number of open cursors for each session. The default value is `50` and the valid values are `0` to `65536`.
+
+ * The [aria_pagecache_segments](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/reference/storage-engines/aria/aria-system-variables#aria_pagecache_segments) parameter sets the number of segments in the Aria page cache, which reduces mutex contention. The default value is `1` and the valid values are `1` to `128`.
+
+ * The [metadata_locks_instances](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/server-management/variables-and-modes/server-system-variables#metadata_locks_instances) parameter sets the number of fast lanes for metadata locks, which can improve data manipulation language (DML) scalability. The default value is `8` and the valid values are `1` to `256`.
+
+ * The [create_tmp_table_binlog_formats](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/ha-and-performance/standard-replication/replication-and-binary-log-system-variables#create_tmp_table_binlog_formats) parameter sets the binary log formats that are allowed for temporary tables. The default value is `STATEMENT` and the valid values are `MIXED` and `STATEMENT`.
